Degrees of freedom
The number of independent measurements or variables used to characterize a biometric trait. DOF impact how accurate a biometric authentication system is. The higher the DOF of a biometric trait, the more accurate the matching process will be. DOF of a biometric trait depends on several factors, such as the quality of the sensor used to capture the biometric data and the quality of the biometric template. For example, the DOF of a fingerprint will be impacted by the resolution of the fingerprint scanner or the environment in which it was scanned.
