LACK OF TRUST
Uptime Institute’s data center survey found most data center personnel recognize the benefits of AI. They acknowledge its potential. But they are leery of potential negative consequences. As a result, trust in AI for use in data center operations has declined for the third year in a row. The majority of respondents said they would trust an adequately trained AI model to make operational decisions in the data center, but the size of this group has shrunk by almost 20% between 2022 and 2024, from 76% to 58%. That is an indicator that the honeymoon period for AI in the data center may be over.
“Some of the negative aspects of AI cited include the lack of decision-making transparency and accountability, the cybersecurity risks introduced by additional network connections, and the potential for AI-based control mechanisms to create additional points of failure,” said Andy Lawrence, Executive Director Research, Uptime Institute. “It appears that the more operators learn about AI, the less they trust the technology.”
