What Is Edge Computing?
Edge computing allows companies to deliver data processing and analysis capabilities to remote sites like branch offices, retail stores, warehouses and manufacturing plants. Reducing their reliance on centralized cloud or data center resources can significantly improve performance and operational efficiency at remote (a.k.a., edge) business sites while mitigating security risks and enabling real-time insights.
Nicole Rennolds, writing for TechRepublic Premium, presents this guide to edge computing, discussing how it works, its evolution, key components, use cases, advantages and disadvantages.

ADVANTAGES
Reduced latency
Leveraging edge data on the local network eliminates the need to transmit this data over the Internet. Reducing the number of network hops between, for example, an IoT security camera and the AI-powered surveillance software that analyzes live video feeds significantly reduces latency, improving overall speed and performance.
Security risk mitigation
Cloud and on-premises data storage solutions are prime targets for hackers because the sheer amount of data they contain increases the likelihood of finding something of high value. Keeping data distributed in much smaller edge storage solutions makes it harder for malicious actors to find the most sensitive or valuable information and also limits the amount of data they could access in one place. Additionally, reducing the amount of data transmitted over the WAN, VPN or open internet also mitigates the risk of interception.
