Video Surveillance Policy
Video surveillance is often a critical security feature for the purpose of monitoring both human and natural events (e.g., wildlife activity, hazardous weather or accidents/disasters). It can both prevent undesirable activity such as vandalism or theft, as well as provide details as to what occurred after the fact in the event such incidents take place. It can also serve to warn personnel of impending danger, and provide evidence to law enforcement or insurance companies.
The purpose of this customizable policy, created by Scott Matteson for TechRepublic Premium, is to establish guidelines for the proper use of video surveillance in safeguarding company assets and personnel.
Featured text from the policy:
Video surveillance equipment should be configured to use a dedicated internal network with no other devices on it other than related equipment, such as servers or backup devices. This network should be secured from other internal networks with only the necessary access provided.
Cameras must be visible and physically secured from tampering or destruction.
Where possible, implement only-as-needed video recording, such as when motion or light is detected. This will help reduce bandwidth and storage requirements and make the task of assessing recorded events more manageable by reducing the volume of footage that needs to be reviewed.
Monitor public work areas only. Private areas such as bathrooms or changing rooms should never be subject to surveillance.
Employees shall not use video surveillance for unethical purposes.
