Can someone explain how AI works in mobile?

    by sadik154shaikh ·

I’m curious about how AI works in mobile. Like, when I use features like face unlock, voice assistants, or those AI camera modes – what’s actually happening behind the scenes? Is it all happening on my phone or in the cloud? I’m not looking for super technical details, just want to understand the basics of how these AI features work on mobile devices. Any explanations would be appreciated!

It might be different between functions. For face unlock or AI camera modes, you can check yourself. Just disable WiFi and mobile data and see what happens if you use it. If it still works, it can’t use anything in the cloud (since there is no connection with the cloud), so it’s local. If you get some error message, or it simply doesn’t work, it’s likely it uses some remote functionality.

Can you tell us what you find?

In simple terms, many AI features on mobile, like face unlock or voice assistants, work by using a mix of on-device processing and cloud support.

On-Device AI: Things like face unlock or AI camera modes often run directly on your phone using specialized chips (like neural engines). This makes them faster and more private since data doesn’t need to leave your device.
Cloud AI: Voice assistants, like Siri or Google Assistant, usually need the internet because your voice commands are sent to the cloud for more advanced processing, where bigger AI models help generate accurate responses.
So, it’s a mix—some tasks are handled locally, while others tap into the cloud for extra brainpower!
