Hiring Kit: Computer Systems Analyst

Information systems and communications networks, and the technology that makes them possible, are the bedrock infrastructural components that every modern business needs to operate effectively and successfully. Everything from basic email to financial management to sophisticated cloud computing services begins and ends with well-maintained, and always available, information technology systems. Designing, implementing, and maintaining information systems for most business enterprises is the responsibility of the computer systems analyst.

This customizable hiring kit, created by Mark W. Kaelin for TechRepublic Premium, provides a framework you can use to find the best candidate for your organization. The kit includes salary details, a job description, interview questions, and a job advert.

    The computer systems analyst will:

    • Review existing information technology systems at the company, find inefficiencies in those systems, and recommend improvements.

    • Document the hardware, software, technical requirements and configurations of both the current and the recommended system from all pertinent perspectives, including infrastructure, location, availability, and ease of use.

    • Conduct a cost-benefit analysis and feasibility study to determine whether the recommended IT systems are economically viable for the organization.

    • Validate that the suggested solution fits the business goals and objectives of the organization.

    • Interview and question users, managers, department heads, executives, and developers to understand their business goals and requirements and how information systems can help achieve those objectives.

    • Design the information technology system for the company and create models, flowcharts, wireframes, and diagrams necessary to document the system.

    • Formulate a plan for how the company’s information system is expected to behave in different situations and environments, and then document exceptions.

    • Work with developers to help them understand the complete requirements of the information system and all the corresponding technical, functional, and operational aspects.

    • Oversee system development, assign tasks, and supervise the progress of those activities.

    • Measure the development progress to ensure it is in sync with documented and approved technical and functional requirements and all planned deadlines.
